His field is the history and politics of Modern Greece and the Balkans in the 19
th and 20
th centuries. His research interests include the Macedonian Question, the emergence of nationalism in the Balkans, Greek historiography, and the functioning of religion and violence in the shaping of collective identities. He is the author of
The Macedonian Question: Britain and the Southern Balkans 1939-1949 (Oxford: Oxford University Press 2008). He is a member of the Editorial Board of
Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies.
